Uber-producer James Wan and Blumhouse productions have unleashed Other Mommy in a new trailer from Universal Pictures. With indie smash Obsession gearing up a home entertainment release, and all things horror being so potently in vogue right now, this Jessica Chastain headliner cranks up the creepy. and introduces a malevolent entity into the life of an 8-year old girl.

Opening on a scene of domestic bliss and and an afternoon ice cream run interrupted. Burnt pasta, an eerie score, and Chastain going full on Smile, give this opening trailer all the weird vibes audiences could hope for. Whether this is simply an opportunity for the revered Oscar winner to explore a road less travelled by, or Other Mommy conceals something more serious beneath the surface only time will tell. In this opening at least, audiences can look forward to ninety percent atmosphere and a smattering of jump scares.
With a visual hat tip to Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil thrown into this montage of escalating images that make up its opening salvo, shock value is where Other Mommy excels. Flashes of Industry‘s Jay Duplass in conversation are cross cut with something far more shocking, before director Rob Savage lands his trump card. Just enough to give audiences a taste without revealing all their menu options in the lead up to that October release.
